This is a scarce and beautifully detailed 1847 map of Florence, Italy by Giuseppe Molini. Originally drawn in 1731 by the Florentine architect Ferdinando Ruggieri, the map covers the old walled center of Florence as it extends on both sides of the Arno River. Map includes details of towers, gardens, piazzas, palaces and in many cases individual trees. The upper right quadrant depicts the lily symbol of Florence. The decorative cartouche lower left depicts a man representing the River Arno and the lion of Florence, Marzocco. Ruggieri was a key actor in developing and defining the Italian Baroque movement, and he is best known for his contribution to the stunning c. 1715 left façade of the Complesso di San Firenze, in Florence. His cartographic endeavors include only one map, which is the map featured here, his important 1731 Pianta Della Citta di Firenze. This map would become the standard map of Florence until the mid nineteenth century.
