Planisphere. Victor Levasseur. 1849. *** A highly decorative, steel engraved map. Shown is the entire known world of the mid-1800's. The map itself has original outline hand coloring delineating some of the major political divisions. Some lands are still missing in the North Polar regions, and the entire continent of Antarctica is still largely a suggestion. Surrounding the map are a number of hand colored illustrations open to interpretation. At the bottom are two cartouches titled Notice Sur Le Planisphere. Hard not to notice! *** Map is clean with no tears or folds, light browning on some margin edges, light ripple to same, blank verso. Diagonal crease in lower right corner of margin does not affect image. Large diagonal crease on left side of map is very faint. *** The sheet is 14 inches high by 19.25 inches. The image, including title, is 11.5 inches high by 16 inches.
