130 x 175 mm., light brown in part of the centrefold otherwise fine condition. A rare Ptolemaic map of Egypt published in Giacomo Gastaldi's influential edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia". It is adorned with a winged Phoenix lower left. Gastaldi was arguably the greatest Italian cartographer of the sixteenth century. It is also the world's first printed pocket atlas, and the first to use a mechanism to hold the plates in position so that the impression was good and level. Karrow, R.W. Philip D. Burden joined his father in the business in 1979. His interests included the British Isles and North America. He wrote and published in 1996 and 2007 the definitive two volume treatise entitled ?The Mapping of North America?. This was the first work to list all known printed maps relating to North America up to the year 1700. Each fully described and illustrated. Clive A.
