Beautiful layout from Asher & Adams' New Commercial Topographical and Statistical Atlas and Gazetteer of the United States. This work was dedicated to displaying the railroads of this time. The visual hierarchy in the map pays tribute to these arteries of long distance commerce just 3 years after the transcontinental railroad was completed. The timing of the publication was fortunate in that it was issued just one year prior to the Panic of 1873. This is an excellent snapshot-in-time of the various states of the Union of the post Civil War landscape in North America. Shows many railroads and names the Buffalo Bayou & Colorado Railroad.
