Moulin-a-Vent is arguably the most noteworthy of the ten Beaujolais crus, located in the very north of the Beaujolais region. Moulin-a-Vent wines, made from the Gamay grape variety, are known for being some of the most concentrated and tannic made in Beaujolais, a far cry from the light, simple Beaujolais Nouveau wines. Floral and fruit-driven in youth, these wines often develop spicy, earthy characteristics as they age. Juliénas is an appellation covering wines produced from vineyards in the north of the Be aujolais region of eastern France. The red, Gamay-based wines of Juliénas often show characters of spice, flowers and red fruit.Chiroubles is an appellation for red wines from Beaujolais. As with all red wines from the region, they are made from the Gamay grape variety. This is one of the smallest of the 10 Beaujolais crus, with around 235 hectares (800 acres) under vine. The wine production zone stretches up the southeast facing slopes of the hills just to the west of Beaujolais. Côte de Brouilly is one of the 10 cru appellations in the Beaujolais region. It covers the slopes of the dormant Mont Brouilly volcano in central Beaujolais. The area is surrounded completely by the vineyards of the much larger Brouilly appellation, but is the source of a noticeably different style of wine, made from the Gamay grape variety. Côte de Brouilly wines are concentrated and elegant, with floral characters, and are less earthy than their Brouilly counterparts. Louis Larmat wine maps, published in the 1940s, are iconic in the history of French wine cartography. These regional maps for all major French wine producing areas, including Bordeaux, Burgundy / Bourgogne, Champagne, Loire, Rhône and Alsace, focus on vineyard zones rather than administrative boundaries. They show named communes, vineyard parcels, and appellation boundaries, coinciding with the establishment of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system in France. Original editions are now highly collectible, perfect for wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.
