This is a bound copy of Sheet 253 of the Ordnance Survey of England, which consists of the Map of the Oxfordshire district of Abingdon and the Vale of the White Horse, near Uffington (designated on the map as 236). The White Horse is a mysterious, gigantic figure of a running horse cut into a hillside, exposing the white chalk of the hill. Nobody knows the origin of the horse, but the Uffington Horse, as it is often called (it is near the village of Uffington and Uffington Castle), has become an import tourist destination especially for those interested in mysteries of history and the ancient past. ********************************** The map is a topological map, drawn 1 inch to the mile, printed in black, red, and brown. It was printed in 1898 by the British Government s Ordnance Survey Office in Southampton. The sheet upon which the map is printed measures approximately 22 1/2" x 16 1/2" ; the map itself measures 18" x 12". It is a folding map, bound into a trim cloth case with a printed paper title label on the front. The case has a touch of flexibility, but is generally solid and stiff. This map has been officially de-accessioned from a University collection; I have spoken with the school and confirmed the fact of the de-accession. The only mark of ownership is the bookplate on the verso of the front cover. There is a small withdrawn stamp on the plate. ************************************* It is in excellent condition, having seen but scant use. There are a few small specks on the title label, a bit of surface rub and scuff to the cloth, but generally speaking the exterior is nice and clean. As to the map itself, there is a bit of toning about the edges; else it is crisp and clean . This 1898 map is exceptionally well-preserved. It is the original 1898 map and not a modern reproduction. On the verso of the fron free end-paper is a small stamp of a book shop : "Alden & Co., Ltd. - Booksellers - Oxford". Seller Inventory # 450
