Single sheet, 35 x 35.5", printed on one side in full color and folded to 60 panels. ____ Mounted into cloth covers, 6.5 x 4.75", which are quite worn.____ The original title, "Watson's Map / Western States / Territories", on the front cover was either blind stamped or any original gilt is totally gone. ____ The front pastedown is an ad for other Watson maps. ____ The next mounting is a single sheet, 6 x 8.5", printed on both sides and folded to from two leaves. (p.1) "Objects Of Interest / In The Pacific States / And The Wonders Of California." (p.2) Text (p.3] is an ad for another Watson map. ____ The map title spans the center at the top edge. ____ It is flanked on both sides by boxes of text. ____ The left is "The Railroads to the Pacific Coast." ____ That on the right is "The Pacific States and Territories." ____ The map itself shows the entire region from 101 west longitude to the Pacific. ____ It includes the westernmost portions of Dakota Territory, Nebraska, Kansas, Indian Territory panhandle and Texas. ____ From there to the Pacific the geography is well delineated though at this point only Oregon, California and Nevada are actually states. ____ All the counties are in full color. ____ Labeled details include: rivers, mountains, towns, Army forts, mines, Indian villages and Indian agencies. ____ A couple of gold mine regions are located in Idaho. ____ Railroad routes are shown and largely labeled. ____ They include: Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, Central Pacific, Kansas Pacific, Denver Pacific and California-Oregon. ____ The map had an 8" tear to one fold, archivally mended on the back.____ There are other short splits to a few interior fold corners.____ The internet locates two copies of this 1872 edition (Huntington, Co-SU).____ cf: Phillips p.920 (1871).
