Epocale trattato di storia ed estetica fotografica, che ripercorre la storia della fotografia partendo dalla scoperta di Nièpce e Daguerre fino agli anni ‘50. Le 323 fotografie che la illustrano appartengono ai maestri della fotografia ed a Mollino stesso, attraverso le opere di 132 fotografi (da Avedon, Brassaï e Blumenfeld a Moholy-Nagy, lo stesso Mollino (1905-1973), Eugene Smith, Stieglitz e Steichen) e di 9 grandi pittori (da Ingres a Picasso), l'autore traccia una storia della fotografia e dell'evoluzione del gusto nel tempo, evidenziando con specifici capitoli il lavoro di alcuni fotografi (Nadar e Hill, Atget, Alvarez Bravo e Man Ray) e realizzando così un suo personale «Musée imaginaire» della fotografia. Prima edizione di quest'opera del famoso architetto-designer torinese (1905-1973), di rilevanza capitale per il rinnovamento della cultura fotografica italiana, finalmente aperta alla riflessione e alle opere dei più innovativi autori stranieri. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo. Pp. 212. Illustrated with b&w and color photo reproductions. Texts by Gerald Matt, Napoleone Ferrari and Lucas Gehrmann. Color photo illustrated paper covered boards, flesh-tone endpapers, color photos on coated paper. A selection of artistic erotic photos discovered after the multi-talented architect's death in 1973. Young women were dressed and posed in carefully arranged and lit settings in Mollino's Turin villa and apartment. From the early 1960s he shot Polaroids many of which he then retouched, varnished and kept in albums. This exhibition included items from the apartment, now restored and since 1999 open as the Museo Casa Mollino. Seller Inventory # 8791

First Edition. Large quarto. Text in Italian. Mollino's important survey of photography from its inception to the date of publication, including reproductions of his own work, and photographs by Man Ray, Edward Steichen, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, and very early Richard Avedon, among others. With 15 tipped-in color plates. This elegantly designed book is widely considered one the best Italian photobooks of the 20th century. Laid in are three original photographs by Mollino, each 7 x 9 1/4 inches, possibly vintage. One of the three images appears in the book on page 224 and is noted as such on the verso; the other two are from the same period. Rear hinge split with a small divot to the rear spine gutter (not affecting pages), front hinge has a smaller split, foxed at top edge; a very good copy (binding is tight) in an almost very good jacket, worn but complete, with the publisher's bellyband (worn).
