Item description from seller

xii, [1], 151 p.; 23.5 cm. (University of California publications. English studies ; 28) Contents -- I. Introduction: young Edwards and the problems of his notes on "The Mind" -- II. The reconstructed manuscript -- III. Conclusion: the mind of Jonathan Edwards -- Appendix: the essays "Of being" and "Of the prejudices of imagination" -- Note on sources -- Index of notes. --- Based on text printed in Works, v. 1, 1829, p. 664-702, from the ms. (afterwards lost) by Sereno Edwards Dwight. Howard used a ms. index in Edwards' hand, showing a ms. of 72 notes, followed by 56 "Subjects to be handled in the Treatise on the mind." (p.10 f.) -- `Perhaps the most significant aspect of what I have called the reconstructed manuscript of Edwards' Notes on "The Mind" is that it reveals, for the first time, two patterns which suggest how the Notes may have come into being. The first pattern is rather faint but it suggests.that Edwards was influenced in his choice of subjects by the senior course of study at Yale; and it therefore strengthens the probability.that the Notes (though not the plans for a Treatise) were mostly composed in 1719-20 when their author was sixteen years of age. The second and clearer pattern is one of a progressive intellectual development which enables the reader to follow a train of thought--a series of considerations and reconsiderations of various topics, marked by an increasing firmness and assurance--in a way that reveals how certain ideas and attitudes were formed in Edwards' mind. For these Notes were formative. Edwards returned to them time and again throughout his life, and they illuminate almost everything he was later to write.' (p. 120) Good, sewn, orig. green wrapper. Upper edge of rear cover chafed.
