There are many ways to live, to depart from this life. Riccardo knows this well, having made a job of guiding souls to their final rest, though he doesn't like to put it that way. Since his first encounter with death as a youth, he's developed a bond with it that lets him sense who yearns to leave this world. Amid the damp, desolate outskirts of Rome, where the sea is gray and memories of a lonely childhood surface like scars, Riccardo chooses to help those who feel they can't go on. He finds them, listens to them, and seeks a dignified exit for their small lives, their final act before taking their own bow.
