Norm and its application in the Indian Universe.
Proceeding of a symposium organized by UPRES-A 7019 “ Langues, textes, histoire et civilisation du monde indien” (Université Paris III-CNRS), held in Paris, 28-29 january 1999.
Edited by Marie-Luce Barazer-Billoret and Jean Fezas.
This multidisciplinary symposium aimed at shedding some light on a key-element of Indian Culture. The fourteen contributions included in this volume emphasize the omnipresence of Norm in the Indian Universe, from the Vedic rsis to modern Tamil writers, in domains ranging from law to fine arts. They show how, in this context, the obligation to respect norms or standards was neither a factor of social immutability nor did it sterilize artistic creation. On the contrary such a reassessment of Tradition required the development of original modes of reflexion, analysis and interpretation, and thus was a ferment of creativity.
