He was born in Lyck (E?k), East Prussia, spending his childhood in Konigsberg, studied physics at the Universitat Munchen (1946), moving soon thereafter to Gottingen for study under Werner Heisenberg. He also worked with Wolfhart Zimmermann and Harry Lehmann. His PhD thesis was on the Schwinger functional in quantum field theory (1954). After teaching at Princeton and CERN he gained a full professorship at the New York Courant Institute [NYU]. In 1968 he left for the Hamburg DESY. Symanzik is most well-known for LSZ reduction formula and the Callanā "Symanzik equation. His early work in non-perturbative quantum field theory together in a circle with other researches was nicknamed "Feldverein", led to now classic results. Symanzik also contributed to the Euclidean quantum field theory ansatz. Beginning in 1970 he turned his interests towards lattice gauge theory. He was awarded the Max Planck medal (1981).
