About this Item

Description:

Small 4to. 1 page. In black ink. On his return home to India, from a conference in London, he met with Benito Mussolini on this date. - From the estate of the late Franz-Peter Bach of Wolfsburg, an avid autograph collector of many years. Bach began collecting in the 1980s, following music tours in Germany as well as attending swap meets in Hanover, where he would not only exchange autographs, but also acquired addresses of celebrities, to whom he would then apply for signatures directly. His collection was meticulously collated, and the present item has been dispersed from one of his many albums. Seller Inventory # 64196

Smith, Kate
Published by NP, 1935
Used Trade Paperback First Edition Signed

Seller: Arundel Books, Seattle, WA, U.S.A.

Seller rating 5 out of 5 stars 5-star rating, Learn more about seller ratings

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" Tall (oblong small). Slight creases, rubbing and browning (chiefly to edges); punch holes in right hand edge (unaffecting inscription); else a well-preserved piece. 1 leaf (recto/verso; unidentified holograph inscription on verso). Signed and inscribed on light green leaf from autograph album: 'To Mary from Kate Smith'. Date is conjectural (not dated; date on verso inscription reads 'March 27, 1931'; probably not so contemporaneous). With intriguing holograph poem of some 8 lines on verso, in a somewhat childish cursive script, dated (as given above) and apparently signed 'John O Bull' (otherwise unidentified; probably that of a child actor). Smith (1907-86); American singer and entertainer, popular on radio (from 1929 on) and on the vaudeville and Broadway stages; noted particularly for her interpretation of Irving Berlin's classic 'God Bless America', which she introduced on her radio show and also sang in the 1943 Warner Bros. film 'This Is the Army'.
