About this Item
A group of fourteen (14) parenting education booklets published for American parents by the Arthur H. Crist Co., publishers of "American Motherhood" magazine. Accordingly, the majority are addressed to mothers, and emphasize the importance of the mother as the center of care and learning in the home. Providing a fascinating look into c.1910 parenting education, the booklets cover diverse subjects ranging from sex education and puberty to character development in children. Positive reinforcement is preferred over negative in this style of parenting. Leaning on nature metaphors, the sex education material provides a fascinating look into gender roles at the time, and the way in which society pressured young women to protect their virginity at all costs. For example, "How to Tell." ends with a vague warning for mothers to give their daughters during "the talk": "Of course you would not choose a bad man to be the father of your children." ("How to Tell", p. [11]). Gender roles are further emphasized in booklets devoted to fathers parenting sons, and mothers parenting daughters. It is interesting to see what values parents wanted to instill in their children the most at this time (e.g. obedience, honesty, work ethic), and how these values have (or have not) continued to be valued by parents today. Leans heavily into the idea that motherhood is a "sacred duty" and destiny for all women, tied to Christianity. Three of the booklets serve as price lists and bibliographies of further reading on these subjects, offered by the same publisher. Overall, the group provides a fascinating look into American parenthood and values c.1910. The physical description of the group: Weeks, Mary Harmon.
