8vo. 2¾ pp. on bifolium. To the German actress, director, and anthroposophist Elya Maria Nevar (née Else Maria Hotop), with whom Rilke had become acquainted in Munich after 1916. Rilke reports on his stay in Paris and on the small castle into which he had just moved: - "Segen mit Dir, mit Deinem ausdauernd gebliebenen Freunde und mit Theophilus! So hat also alles ein Ziel gehabt und: das Ziel ist nun der Anfang [.] Das kleine alte, sehr entlegene Schlösschen, von dem aus ich Dir schreibe, hat mich vor einigen Wochen, mich allein mit einer Wirtschafterin, die mich stillschweigend und unfragend (oh ganz anders als Rosa!) versorgt, in seinen Schutz genommen -, und hier ist's nun wirklich völlig, Elya, völlig so, wie ich's brauche: Du weißt, wie oft wir, in der etwas mühsäligen Einsamkeit der Ainmillerstraße von solchen Schlössern geträumt haben. Ich glaube, nun braucht ichs wirklich! Ich konnte nicht mehr. Aber nun ist die Verpflichtung auch ganz groß, das wunderbar Gewährte auszunutzen [.]". - That year, Elya had married the actor Max Gümbel-Seiling and given birth to their son, Theophilus. A few weeks prior, Rilke had moved into the estate of Richard Ziegler, the director of the Swiss Federal Equestrian Agency (EPRA), which Ziegler only inhabited during the summer, and spent the winter of 1920/21 there; in the summer of 1921 he would find a permanent residence in the Château de Muzot, a small castle above Sierre in the canton of Valais. - Small tears along the edges and in the centerfold; traces of early repairs to a tear on the second leaf.
