Enclosed orig. carte-de-visite photograph of Hans Christian Andersen by F. Petersen. 1853. 8.8×5.6 cm. Framed: 16×12.5 cm. Mounted on cardboard, browned. The note is written in German and is a response to a request for an autograph, and Andersen is excited: "Hochgeerther! Sie wünschen für Ihre Autograph-Samlung auch meine Handschrift, ich freue mich Ihren Wunsch zu erfullen. Ergebenst H.C. Andersen."The poem on verso goes: "In der englischen Marine durch alles Tougwerk grosses und kleines geht ein rother Faden um zuzeigen, es gehört der Krone; durch das menschliche Leben, im grossen und Kleinen geht ein unsichtbare Faden, der uns zeigt wir gehören Gott". (ENG: In the English Navy a thread runs through the cordage which says that it belongs to the crown of human life.
