About this Item
Civil Rights Preriod handwritten speech notes prepared for Malcolm X, unsigned, in blue ink. 1 page, 11 lines, including heading. Fine condition without folds or tears. Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, got in trouble with the law at an early age. While in jail, he was converted to the Nation of Islam, which preached improvement of African American rights through violence and separation of the races. For him, it was a way to change his life, and put to work his tremendous intellect which had been unappreciated in the white-dominated society of 1940s America. While in prison, he began corresponding with Elijah Muhammad, the controversial leader of Nation of Islam and began calling himself 'Malcolm X'. He began advocating for Nation of Islam after his parole in 1952. A gifted writer and speaker, Malcolm X quickly rose to prominence, even eclipsing his mentor Muhammad. Towards the end of his life, he broke with Nation of Islam and disavowed their message of violence. But in February 1965, Malcolm X was gunned down by Nation of Islam members while walking to the podium to give a speech to the Organization for Afro-American Unity. The notes offered here, are not in the hand of Malcolm X, but appear to be his talking points for a speech to members of the Nation of Islam. The notes describe how to go about affecting prison conversions, much like his own. : "Members: Buy little on installment. Stay home. Are proud that their goods are 'paid for.' E[lijah Muhammad] welcomes reformed sinners into the fold, but selects them carefully. His three Temples in jails are all composed of men who were converted behind bars, 'When they come out they are closely scrutinized by the Brethren, and convict backsliders get punishment from the Brethren that hurts them more than what they got in jail.'".
