Add to basketThis item is a letter, on War Department letterhead, appointing Captain Wilson T. Hartz as Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers (under Brigadier General Nelson Taylor). The document is signed by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, and is dated October 23, 1862. The document has been folded (with some closed tears along the horizontal folds) , and has some age-staining. There is edgewear, and some loss to the left margin (no loss of text). Hartz was a Civil Engineer, who upon enlisting during the Civil War, became a career military officer - serving in the volunteers in the Civil War; and in the regular army in Alabama during Reconstruction, and the American West during the Indian Wars. ; 27A.
