Annual address given to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1869, given by a Wisconsin lawyer and judge on the subject of race through a distinctly Western lens. Provides fodder for White supremacy in America with statements such as "What we call the Caucasian race . is the original primeval race, the most perfect form of physical beauty, symmetry and proportion--the crowning work of creation" (p.18). Includes a brief annual report of the society in the back of the volume, and list of officers. Single vol. (8.5" by 5.75"), pp. 32, [2], original printed goldenrod wrps. Ink ownership inscription of Rev. N. Bouter dated April 1878. Harlow S. Orton (1817-1895) was an American lawyer and judge who served on the Wisconsin Supreme Court from 1878 until his death. Very good. Some dust soiling, the occasional spot.
