About this Item
The visiting card of Charles Green, Britain's most famous balloonist of the 19th century. His first ascent was in a coal gas balloon ( his own inovation) in 1821. By the time he retired he had flown in a balloon more than 500 times, once traveling from London as far as Weilburg, in the Duchy of Nassau Germany, a distance of some 480 miles, in 18 hours. Green is credited with the invention of the tail rope as an aid to steering and landing a balloon. A trophy named after him, the Charles Green Salver, was first given to Green after a balloon trip in Norfolk. It has since been awarded to Brian Jones and Bertrand Piccard for the first round-the-world balloon flights. Green was included in the ballooning hall of fame in 1999. The card is undated. Green started his career as a ballonist in the 1820's and continued until 1852 when he made his farewell attempt in Vauxhall Public Gardens. He died from a heart attack at the age of 85 at Aerial Villa, Tufnell Park, Holloway, London (the address on the card gives Aerial Villa, Highgate). He is buried in Highgate Cemetary, His gravestone is decorated with a balloon. Condition: Very Good. The front of the card is a little browned at the edges and slightly marked but in the main clean. Written on the back of the card in pencil are the words "C. Green, Gas works, Merthyr Tidvill" plus another word that I cannot make out. There are a few brown marks on the back of the card.
