About this Item

Large 8vo. (266 x 205 mm). iii, 544 pp. Illustrations, figs., tables. Later orange cloth, gilt-stamped spine title; spine faded. Very good. Two original papers in one collection by Nobel Prize winners Bridgman and Chandrasekhar. Bridgman received his award in 1946 for "the invention of an apparatus to provide extremely high pressures and for the discoveries he made therewith in the field of high-pressure physics." [Wasson]. Bridgman states: "The purpose of this review is to summarize work in the field of high pressures which has been published in accessible form between the writing of my book, The Physics of High Pressure, in 1930 and June, 1945." [from the Introduction]. Chandrasekhar was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize, which he shared with William A. Fowler, "for his theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars." [Wasson]. Provenance: David Middleton (b. 1920), noted pioneer in the field of statistical communication theory (last name gilt-stamped on spine). DSB, II, pp. 457-461 (Bridgman); Wasson, Nobel Prize Winners, p. 151 (Bridgman) and p. 201 (Chandrasekhar). Bookseller Inventory # S10235
