Die Passhöhe liegt auf 2'164 m ü. M. an der europäischen Wasserscheide zwischen Mittelmeer und Nordsee. Der historische Säumerpfad wurde im 19. Jahrhundert zu einer modernen Hochalpenstrasse ausgebaut, die im Sommer offen ist.
