Si le livre salue des auteurs américains aussi prestigieux que Nathaniel Hawthorne ou Edgar Allan Poe, la créativité d'un Joe Brainard telle que l'exprime son célèbre «I remember» (qui servit de modèle au «Je me souviens» de Perec) ou la mémoire d'un George Oppen, figure tutélaire de la poésie américaine, la plupart de ces textes s'attache à payer également tribut aux écrivains français qui ont contribué à faire de Paul Auster (lui-même, un temps, éminent traducteur du français) "le plus européen des écrivains américains" : du grand poète Jacques Dupin auquel le lia une longue et profonde amitié à l'effervescent Georges Perec aussi inventif que sensible, sans oublier André du Bouchet et sa poésie virulente ou Alain Robbe-Grillet, personnalité jubilatoire et écrivain libérateur.
Dans un entretien accordé à «The Paris Review», Paul Auster évoque également sa propre pratique de l'écriture, insistant sur sa foi inébranlable dans le roman en tant que genre majeur, sans pour autant nier les vertus du septième art tel que l'incarne son ami Jim Jarmusch, dont il qualifie l'un des films, «Night on Earth», de véritable poème sur New York.
Arts poétiques multiples, infinie variété des tempéraments mais identique engagement vis-à-vis de la création : à travers l'évocation de tant de figures bien-aimées, Paul Auster célèbre avant tout les pouvoirs fédérateurs de l'art s'efforçant d'interpréter et d'éclairer le texte éternellement énigmatique que délivre le monde.

About the Author
Né en 1947 à Newark dans le New Jersey, Paul Auster étudie de 1965 à 1970 les littératures française, anglaise et italienne à Columbia University, où il obtient un Master of Arts. Il publie à cette époque des articles consacrés essentiellement au cinéma dans le Columbia Review Magazine, et commence l’écriture de poèmes et de scénarios pour films muets qui deviendront ultérieurement Le Livre des illusions.
De 1971 à 1974, il s’installe à Paris et traduit Dupin, Breton, Jabès, Mallarmé, Michaux ou Du Bouchet. Unearth, son premier recueil de poèmes, paraît aux États-Unis en 1974, puis en France, en 1980, aux éditions Maeght. En 1979, il publie sous le pseudonyme de Paul Benjamin un roman policier intitulé Fausse Balle, dans la “Série noire”.
Son roman, Cité de verre (premier volume de sa Trilogie new-yorkaise), paraît en 1987 aux éditions Actes Sud et connaît un succès immédiat auprès des médias et du public.
Paul Auster est l’auteur d’une œuvre de premier plan, reconnue dans le monde entier et traduite dans plus de quarante langues. Écrivain prolifique, outre une vingtaine de romans, il a publié des essais, nouvelles, pièces de théâtre, recueils de poésie, scénarios…
Il a reçu de nombreuses distinctions littéraires dont le Médicis étranger pour Léviathan, le Premio Napoli pour Sunset Park, et le très prestigieux prix Prince des Asturies pour l’ensemble de son œuvre. Il a été finaliste de l’International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award pour Le Livre des illusions, du Pen/Faulkner Award for Fiction pour La Musique du hasard, ou encore du Man Booker Prize pour 4 3 2 1.
Sa pièce de théâtre, Laurel et Hardy vont au paradis, a été montée en 2000 au théâtre de La Bastille, son roman La Musique du hasard a été adapté au cinéma par Philip Haas en 1991, et Cité de verre a été adapté en bande dessinée, avec des illustrations de David Mazzucchelli, en 1999.
Cinéaste, il a écrit plusieurs scénarios dont ceux de Smoke et de Brooklyn Boogie, films qu’il a coréalisés avec Wayne Wang (1995). Puis il se lance seul dans la réalisation de longs-métrages : Lulu on the bridge, sélectionné au Festival de Cannes dans la catégorie “Un certain regard” en 1998 et La Vie intérieure de Martin Frost, sorti en 2006.
Paul Auster a été élu membre de l’American Academy of Arts and Letters et nommé Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Il a vécu la majeure partie de sa vie à Brooklyn avec sa femme, la romancière et essayiste Siri Hustvedt. Il y décède le 30 avril 2024 à l'âge de 77 ans.
L'ensemble de son œuvre est publié chez Actes Sud. Baumgartner est son dernier roman.

Ecrivain, elle est aussi peintre et productrice de radio. Elle a publié trois livres : Le Tour du monde en porte-conteneurs (Gallimard, 2003), Susanne (Léo Scheer, 2006) et Le Voyage à Vladivostok (Léo Scheer, 2007).
Céline Curiol est romancière et essayiste. Diplômée de l'École nationale supérieure des techniques avancées puis journaliste pendant une dizaine d'années à l'étranger, elle enseigne aujourd'hui l'écriture et la communication dans plusieurs grandes écoles. Elle a été pensionnaire à la Villa Médicis en 2023/2024.
Elle est l’auteure de romans et essais dont Voix sans issue (2005), Permission (2007), Exil intermédiaire (2009), L'Ardeur des pierres (2012), Un quinze août à Paris. Histoire d'une dépression (2014), Les Vieux ne pleurent jamais (2016), Les Lois de l'ascension (2021) et Prendre la tangente (2022) parus chez Actes Sud.
Elle a traduit plusieurs textes de Paul Auster (Ici et Maintenant, La Pipe d’Oppen).
