"recommendations", plus 219 woodcut engravings in the text. ***CONTENT: Stöckhardt (1809-1886) was a celebrated German chemist, most noted for his work on agricultural fertilizers, and particularly his advocacy of the use of nitrogen compounds. In this respect, he disagreed with Liebig, who argued that atmospheric nitrogen was available to plants. Eventually, the highly successful use of nitrogenous fertilizers validated Stöckhardt's arguments. This volume, going through many editions in Europe and America, contains an amalgam of physics, biology and chemistry. It covers traditional topics (non-metals, metals, heat, crystallization, solution, etc.), but also has much on the organic chemistry of plant and animal substances. A plethora of simple lab experiments are diagramed and described in the text. ***CONDITION: This is a lovely, Near Fine copy in the original blind-decorated brown cloth, with blind ruling and gilt lettering on the backstrip. The covers show only a hint of wear to the extremities; spine ends well preserved, spine lettering bold and bright. Joints and hinges solid, binding very firm. The text pages and illustrations are pristine: fresh, clean and bright. The only evidence of prior ownership is a contemporary signature "James G. Sproat, Wareham, Mass." on the front endpapers.
