Synopsis

"If you are trying to understand how depression affects men, you need to read this book!" -AMAZON REVIEWER
Recently, Christopher Scott Downing documented his failed attempt to overcome depression without doctors, therapists, or medication. The result is a Mr. Fix-it caper gone absurdly wrong. It's hilarious at times, deeply personal, and ultimately eye-opening. Finally, it's a wake up call to men -and their loved ones- who misunderstand depression or are commonly resistant "to talk about it."
"The book is exceptionally well-crafted and compelling." -onlinebookclub.com
Written in a strong, concise style directed towards other men, this memoir is beginning new discussions about Major Depressive Disorder by exploring these questions:
  • What do men experience under depression?
  • How does depression manifest in men uniquely?
  • Why do many men refuse help with this treatable disease?
"About as funny as a swift pop to the mouth. Which, you gotta admit, under the right circumstance can be pretty damn funny." -GOODREADS REVIEWER
Veteran psychologist Steven J. Hanley, Ph.D. provides the wonderful, thought-provoking foreword.

About the Author

Christopher Scott Downing graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a degree in Russian Studies. Subsequently, he spent his adult life working in restaurants and grocery stores. Then one day, he discovered that he was severely depressed about the whole thing. Once he decided to start writing that experience down, he found he couldn't stop. And that's pretty much that.
Now his goal is to help men begin the conversation about their mental health concerns.
He and his wife live with their two children in Denver.
Van Gogh in Peppers is his first memoir. It won't be his last.

Review

4 of 4 Stars:

Although Christopher epitomizes the archetype of the Byronic hero, at no point does he romanticize his experiences with depression. The candid narrative detailing his outrageous and often downright abusive behavior is cringe-worthy at times, yet the heavy subject matter of the novel is balanced by scintillating prose, sparkling wit and a self-deprecating attitude that prevents this memoir from becoming an angst fest. The author has a gift for characterization, and the players in this story come to life through effortless dialogue and the narrator's sharp observation of human relationships.-onlinebookclub.org

For those who have cared about someone who suffers from depression or anxiety, this is an invaluable chance to view the world from within the depths of a depressed mind in a way that engages, educates, and even entertains. It's a gift of validation to those who struggle with depression or anxiety.
-Kristine Tye, Marriage & Family Therapist

If you want to get inside the mind and experience of someone with really deep despair, but who can't see it and can't reach out for help, this book is a must read. I recommend it not only for men who are struggling, but for their friends and family too to help them to get a handle on an experience that often defies understanding, when seen from the outside. -Matt Fox, Counsellor and Ecotherapist
