Have you ever mailed a fan letter to a rock star? Brenda Dunkirk did, but she didn't think 80s metal star Keith Kutter would actually read it. She also never imagined Keith would end up living in her house and destroying her marriage.
Brenda thinks she's the luckiest woman in the world when Keith's band, Hydra, declares her home their base camp while recording their comeback album. She fantasizes about late night lyric writing sessions at her kitchen table and being the first one to hear all the new songs. With her help she knows the band will get back on top where they belong. Swept up in the glamour of being the rock and roll muse, Brenda risks her already faltering marriage. Tim, her husband, walks out on her and Hydra's chaos, and to make matters worse her boss is threatening to fire her if she doesn't get her act together at work. The band will not leave until the album is done--it could be another month or it could be another year.
Ultimately Brenda must choose. Is it possible to be one man's wife and another man's muse?

As a former college radio station DJ, BJ was inspired to write this book after asking herself "Whatever happened to all those 80's rock stars and one-hit wonders?" Her writing career has contributions to RI Fit Magazine. But her prouder achievements are her original angry chick rock songs, usually about bad boyfriends, accompanied by her out of tune guitar. She blogs at http: //bjknapp.com. BJ resides in Rhode Island with her husband, Todd, and dogs Nemo and Potter. She is an avid sailor and scuba diver, and also enjoys pretty much any outdoor activity such as hiking and geocaching as well. She has also single-handedly orchestrated hundreds of failed attempts at cooking.
BJ Knapp creates for her witty and endearing protagonist, Brenda Dunkirk, a mix tape of the pleasures and perils of serving as a musician's muse. Besides the Music is a smart, humorous look at the compromises of marriage, art, and career-- and the power of rock 'n roll to rock the soul. ---Celine Keating, author of Layla and Play for Me Beside the Music is a real treat from first-time author BJ Knapp. Her writing style is warm and witty and her characters are engaging and totally authentic. I loved this book from beginning to end. ---Gail Ward Olmstead, author of Jeep Tour, Guessing at Normal and Driving on the Left Knapp has spun a story full of wit and realistically drawn characters who dare to ask if heroes can rise again and if new dreams can rival old. --Nicole Waggoner, author of Center Ring and The Act The whole idea of all of this is quite unique--if you're looking for a quirky and funny tale than I strongly suggest picking this one up. It was a breath of fresh air for me because the read is light yet fun. I can't wait to read more books by the author in the future as she clearly has a knack for writing! ---Pretty Little Book Reviews
