Grade 4-6-Yet another biography published since Johnson revealed in November of 1991 that he had contracted the HIV virus. After a brief look at the subject's childhood, Schwabacher presents the on-court highlights of the basketball star's high school, college, and professional careers. A brief final chapter brings readers up to date. While mention is made that the HIV virus can be passed through sexual activity, the subject of how Johnson might have contacted the virus isn't broached. His comeback attempt in 1992 that was aborted more or less because of fears aired by a number of his fellow N.B.A. competitors isn't noted either. A short list of further readings contains one title dealing with AIDS. This book is similar in scope to Keith Greenberg's Magic Johnson (Lerner, 1992). Peter Pascarelli's Courage of Magic Johnson (Bantam, 1992) presents a more detailed discussion of Johnson's affliction, and is aimed at more mature audiences.
