Gr. 7-12. Although the "primary sources" mentioned in the series title, Primary Sources of World Cultures, apparently refer only to the illustrations, which are beautifully reproduced, well-captioned, full-color prints, these books are still excellent starting points for reports. Each is an in-depth account of the country's history and culture, from ancient times to today, covering everything from geography, language, religions, and art to education, work, and the role of women. The writers avoid the trap of the Eurocentric viewpoint. They mention international relations--for example, Pakistan's cooperation with the U.S. in Afghanistan, the Iran-Contra scandal, and President Bush's reference to Iran as part of "the axis of evil." But the emphasis is on the people, in all their diversity and with all their problems, including those of the present day, such as child labor in Pakistan. The images from Iran celebrate the country's incredibly rich ancient history, but there's not much shown about today. In Pakistan, readers will see contemporary scenes ranging from Karachi's downtown financial district to a close-up of Muslims at prayer. Quick-reference fact summaries, a glossary, and a bibliography round out each book. Hazel Rochman
