Reviews

Grade 5-9-A good overview of the life and work of the scientist. Bredeson emphasizes his discovery of the polio vaccine, but also devotes a chapter to his research projects since the 1950s, and, more recently, his part in the search for an AIDS vaccine. The author obviously sees his subject as a hero, but touches on enough personal details from his childhood, days as a student, and family life (including his divorce and remarriage) to keep him off a pedestal. All information is provided in a clearly written, somewhat lively manner, with well-captioned black-and-white photographs interspersed throughout. A chronology, footnotes for each chapter that cite sources, suggestions for further reading, and an adequate index are appended. Useful for reports, this volume will also be of interest to general science or biography readers. Very similar is Marjorie Curson's Jonas Salk (Silver Burdett, 1990), in coverage and approach. Both books do a good job of describing the polio epidemics, which will seem foreign to today's young people. Jim Hargrove's The Story of Jonas Salk and the Discovery of the Polio Vaccine (Childrens, 1990) covers the same ground in less depth for younger readers. All are successful in explaining the concepts of virus, bacteria, vaccine, and antibody to children with little science background.
