THE detachment of the 4th Scottish Rifles which had been with the 20th Brigade rejoined Headquarters at Boshof on the 15th August. Lieut.-Colonel Montague Johnstone took over command of the battalion from Major Chavasse a few weeks later, having remained at Kimberley for a short leave en route to Boshof. Captain A. F. Townsend resumed his duties of Staff-Officer in place of Captain J. Campbell Gardner, who was appointed to command the Mounted Infantry raised in the 4th Scottish Rifles. These latter had been commanded in the first instance by Captain D. Burns-Macdonald who took a great interest in them, and did a good deal of patrolling in the district until he was obliged to go home on sick leave early in September. Between the middle of July and September the garrison of Boshof was considerably reduced. The half Battalion of the 3rd South Wales Borderers had gone to Warrenton and Fourteen Streams under Lieut.-Colonel Healy, while nearly all the details of the 1st Division had rejoined their respective battalions, so that the garrison numbered little over 900. Colonel Courtenay being obliged to proceed to Cape Town 32 on sick leave on the 6th September, Lieut.-Colonel Montague Johnstone took over the duties of Commandant of Boshof, and Major Chavasse, those of Officer Commanding the 4th Scottish Rifles, until Colonel Courtenay's return to Boshof on the 25th September. On the 9th September two farmers arrived from the north of the district and reported that they had been commandeered on the 7th, and had come to Boshof, having been cut off from Hoopstad by the enemy's patrols.
