Synopsis
"She knows that she controls the volume, she controls the pulsing in my veins, she controls the entire picture. Because she has to. Because someone else did not do their job and terrible things happened." She is the Helicopter Woman, and an emotional and physical assault established her mission: 24 vigilance in the life of the young woman detailed in this memoir. A childhood unfolds of loss, betrayal, and dysfunction at the hands of a military father, a well intentioned but emotionally removed immigrant mother, and a culture that views young women not as individuals to be celebrated but as objects to be used and discarded. But the intervention of a caring family in adulthood, a skilled therapist, and a Damascus road experience ultimately reveal a life rich with the possibility of hope, forgiveness and redemption.

About the Author
Charlotte Seawell began her career as a composer and performer in the genres of country, Americana, and folk -- work that continues today. A published poet and essayist, this memoir - based on her experiences growing up in a not-so-functional military family in the fifties and sixties - is her first novel. Other works include A Caddy's View: The Poetry of Tournament Golf, I Am Reminded of This, a collection of spiritual essays, and The Bicycle, a work in progress about her mother's experiences growing up in Germany under the reign of Hitler and the shadow of World War II. A full time musician until beginning her teaching career in her thirties, she currently teaches writing to middle and high school students and works with young singer/songwriters. She is also involved in ministry at the local men's mission and in the Washington State prison system.
