Synopsis

Compelled by his concerns about social instability and destruction of the environment, author Hamish Simpson reveals his booklet, "Musings on the Ethics of Growth." In a series of brief articles, the booklet uncovers underlying causes of daily frustrations and global angst. It shows how current policies, which depend on momentum of growth, are increasing scarcities and earthly destruction. It suggests that single-minded pursuit of affluence has become divisive and careless of innate humanitarian needs. Where other books reflect on individual aspects of society and the environment, this simple format shows how fundamental causes of discontent are all closely related and stem from unreasonable expectations of lasting progress for all. Simpson warns that appeasement to trivial demands endangers the greater long-term stability of society. He cries out for return of integrity and a willingness to face unpalatable, worldly realities. Contrary to establishment thinking, he encourages the reader to see that lasting progress depends on compatibility with the earth's limited bounty. This enlightening booklet persuades the reader to recognize the folly of perpetual growth without any balancing controls. Social stability, on which civilization depends, requires constraint as well as innovation. It points out that all successful endeavors, from formation of the universe to man's exploration of space, resulted from obedience to the implacable laws of nature. Modern freedoms, which science has provided, are being abused by short-term gratification of desires and result in conditions that are foreign to our wellbeing. The booklet asks the reader to look beyond his or her daily routine, to the way the world is going, and hopes to inspire radical change and optimism for a better future. In any event, it will provide any open mind with food for thought.

About the Author

Born in Largs, Scotland, at the outbreak of World War II, the author has always been curious about the chancy nature of life. Over seventy years of rapid social changes, his architect experience, worldwide travel, and his observation of flora and fauna have developed an awareness of the fragile nature of the planet and of our vulnerability to excessive, rapid growth. The war resulted in loss of his father and uprooting his family to Sutton Coldfield, England. His concerns have inspired him to write about aspirations and why they are so difficult to achieve. He is convinced that desires to grow and prosper have to be moderated to become compatible with the earth's limited capacity to provide. He has come to believe the power of science to enhance innovation, growth, and prosperity has blinded us all to our ultimate reliance on the good health of our planet.
