A profile of each of the zoos gives detailed information about the facility, its history, location, inhabitants, and educational and research functions. At the end of each zoo entry are such data as address, founding date, number of animals, and attendance, plus, in most instances, the full list of each zoo's directors, with their years of tenures. In many cases, the URL for a Web site is also provided. Each of the entries for animals provides information on natural history and biology, exhibit and collection history, and conservation programs and partnerships.
There are numerous black-and-white photographs of the animals and various depictions of the zoos. Most of these are clear. The lack of color illustrations is a disappointment, as is the fact that some of the historical pictures of the zoos do not have the dates. Most of the entries have a further reading list that includes key resources dating to the late 1990s. There is a comprehensive index in the third volume.
The text is very readable and would be useful to students and the general public. This is a recommended set for public and undergraduate libraries. RBB
