Synopsis

The prisoner rose to his full, impressive height. His gaze, which before had struck me as shifty, was now straight and commanding. Impressively he spoke:

"His name?"

"His name," my father said of me, "is Prosper. In full, John Prosper Camilio Paleologus. Never more than one of us wears the surname of Constantine -- and he, not until he succeeds me as head of the house."

"One name is enough for a king," said the prisoner, motioning to me with his hands.

"Kneel, boy," my father commanded -- and there in the prison cell I knelt to be made monarch!

About the Author

Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (1863 - 1944) was a Cornish writer who published using the pseudonym Q. Although a prolific novelist, he is remembered mainly for the monumental publication The Oxford Book Of English Verse 1250-1900 (later extended to 1918) and for his literary criticism. He influenced many who never met him, including American writer Helene Hanff, author of 84, Charing Cross Road and its sequel, Q's Legacy. His Oxford Book of English Verse was a favorite of John Mortimer's fictional character Horace Rumpole.
