Synopsis

When you're down at the bottom there's nowhere to go but up. Both literally and figuratively, this notion proves true for the characters in Stars & Stripes. Some evolved into stars while others earned stripes as they attained their right of passage to freedom of expression. The Sisters: Pearl and Pauline's tight-knit relationship begins to unravel and drift apart when Pauline decides to follow her long-time boyfriend turned fiance up north to Chicago. Pearl, a strong and unattached young woman believes that her younger sister Pauline is weak for Oliver and isn't making the best decision overall. Especially since Oliver's proposal comes when Pearl and Pauline's mother, Muh Dear is diagnosed as deathly ill with yellow fever. But Pearl soon finds out that life can get lonely and quite cold on her solo journey from warm Biloxi, Mississippi to blustery New York City. The Brothers: Johnny and Ed are two opposites who find themselves with equally opposing views on migration when their parents get lynched in their hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Johnny, the younger of the two, believes in staying true to your roots no matter what, while headstrong Ed feels that the South has sent its message loud and clear in telling them they simply aren't wanted there. The two end up starting a new life in Harlem where a friendly and enterprising Big Nate shows them the New York way. Stars will rise and fall and stripes are hard earned in this historic tale of life and love.
