Calliyah's life did not start very well. As she took her first breath, her mother took her last, dying in childbirth. The tragedy was compounded by Calliyah having one leg misshapen and twisted, becoming branded by the villagers as a pariah - a 'Dark One' - who should be taken into the forest and left to die. Her father, though, manages to get her to his sister some safe distance away. However, violent death - sometimes mysterious random killing - is all around and again Calliyah is on her own. Fate intervenes and she finds a new life, training as a priestess of the Goddess. Even now she is not safe. There are evil forces at work. The Krieff, a Sun God worshipper, is fierce in his determination to force everyone to turn from their own benign goddess. The Krieff raises an army, reinforcing it with obscene half-human creatures he has created. Calliyah finds herself at the forefront of the forces trying to thwart the Krieff - forces that include some long forgotten dragons. Bonds are formed between unlikely allies in their bloody battles to overcome the evil of the Krieff.

Gary Maile lives in Kent with his wife, Carolyn, and three cats. The eldest of three sons, Gary's vivid imagination was fostered by the works of H.G. Wells and Charles Dickens, which his parents purchased when he was ten years old. An avid reader of science fiction and fantasy since his teenage years, Gary would like nothing more than to live in a world of ancient walled cities and dragons. As that wasn't likely to happen during his lifetime, Gary decided to create his own world that, unsurprisingly, is full of ancient walled cities and dragons.
