Grade 5-7-- With 2 exceptions, the 11 presidents' wives singled out as most influential resided in the White House during this century. In fact, 7 of those included have been first lady since World War II. Anthony presents a sketch of each, with information about their early years as well as the unusual strengths of character for which they are noted. Black-and-white reproductions and photographs of varying quality are sprinkled throughout. Unfortunately, the oversimplification is reminiscent of biographies in the "Childhood of Famous Americans" series (Aladdin). For example, the following chain of events as described by the author raises serious concerns. ". . . Franklin helped stamp out a small fire. Then he went swimming in cold water. This change from very hot to very cold caused a blood clot to form in his body. The clot stuck in his spinal cord. Diagnosed with polio, Franklin was unable to move his legs." Not only is this cause and effect medically inaccurate, but also readers may fear contracting the disease in this manner.
