Published anonymously in 1554, the Lazarillo de Tormès tells the story - in the form of a confessional - of the youthful adventures of a town crier who considers himself incredibly lucky to be taking part in a ménage à trois with the servant girl of an arch priest. Barely hidden under this facetious tale is a satirical account of Spain under Charles V, who banned the book in 1559. The author of this volume provides a study that tackles the many questions associated with the tale. French text.
