Whether it is about the headscarf dispute or the importance of decent paid work, about the duties to the poor, or about dealing with animals and nature, 'respect' and 'recognition' are among the most important moral terms of our time. In all cases, it is fundamentally about the question of what people morally owe each other and other living beings and why. However, it is often unclear in philosophical discussion what the terms each mean and whether they fit together conceptually. It is therefore a concern of this book to clarify the terms fundamentally, to dissolve a supposed competition, and to integrate both principles into a conception. The first term 'respect' is to be understood as a basal normative principle, which is aimed at fundamental moral claims, i.e. in the case of people to their claim to be respected in their dignity, autonomy, freedom and fundamental interests. But this alone is not enough for a dignified and good life: the second term of 'recognition' goes beyond and is aimed at concrete needs and achievements. If you then take into account the importance of related moral attitudes such as tolerance, consideration and compassion, a challenging multi-criterial ethics model arises that adequately responds to the challenges of our plural and multicultural societies.
