Castilla del Pino is a well-respected psychiatrist and author of approximately 30 books, some of which concern human emotion. Over the course of his 50-year practice, he realized that he needed to systematize his observations about emotion so that the information could be useful. He views the human being as una m quina de desear (a desire machine) and thus places feelings at the very center of life in the social world, arguing that neurobiology cannot fully explain them. Therefore, he contends, it becomes psychiatry's task to fill the theoretical lacunae concerning the function of emotions and their origin, development, expression, and also psychopathology. This is a difficult topic that has long bedeviled students of the mind. The author's theory relies heavily on the use of patients' responses to projective tests, such as the Thematic Apperception Test (20 photos of the test are included as plates at the back of the book). Most of the brief case histories he presents are keyed to specific TAT pictures. Unfortunately, the author writes like a clinician and is prone to using poststructuralist phraseology and obscure formulas, which will frustrate the nonspecialist.
