This timely book of meditations intends to guide us to an encounter with Christ as homeless person, and Parker's terra-cotta renderings of the stations of the cross are powerful. Unfortunately, the poetry--a choppy prose--is full of abstract declarations and adjectives that serve to distance the reader. Lines like "this sad/ recumbent motionless phalanx/ the dispossessed" or "The terror of Gate 12/ Station 12/ Feat trembling/ overmastering" describe rather than present emotion and experience; they neatly identify what the reader is to feel rather than evoking a response. The engaging language of the many Bible verses included contrasts sharply with the flat modern text. Obviously well intentioned, this book will appeal to some.
