This has included a novel cell and gene therapy developed in his lab taken through to a first-in-man trial, and recently his work demonstrating the damage caused by tobacco to the normal epithelium of the lung. This work has given us intriguing insights into respiratory biology, potentially demonstrating an unknown power of regeneration in the lung. Most important however was the works global impact on the general public’s awareness of the relentless damage caused by smoking and the crucial message that it is ‘never too late to quit’.
