Batman surveys the early history of California and the Pacific coast from the arrival of the Spanish missionaries to the decline of the cattle hide trade in the early 1840s. Focusing on the trade in furs and cattle hides, he presents a series of biographical vignettes of some of the people involved, including Fa ther Serra, George Vancouver, James Cook, Jed Smith, and Richard Henry Dana. This approach weakens when Batman deals with the increasing num ber of arrivals in the early 19th century. However, his synthesis of a large num ber of memoirs and studies is a useful introduction to the subject and is a rea sonable purchase for libraries seeking a general work in this area. Stephen H.
