Blair ------ NOTES ON THE CONTRIBUTORS. // Though the present century has seen a growth of interest in the arts of Africa, vernacular architecture has been generally disregarded, even by the architects and planners who have been shaping the cities of the continent with the forms and styles of the western world. Recently, the need to accommodate the large numbers moving to the cities, experiments with structural forms, and the revelations of anthropologists on the structure of tribal societies, have caused architects to consider African building anew. Shelter in Africa presents a collection of writings by architects, planners and anthropologists who have made studies in many parts of Africa. The book is introduced by the Editor, who relates the ethnic groups of Africa to the geographic and environmental characteristics of the principal regions. Population distribution, climate contrasts and the natural resources which affect building types and planning forms, are discussed and the chapters that follow are placed in these contexts. A study of the camel nomads of the Kordofan, whose movements are conditioned by the search for water and grazing land is contrasted with one of the fishing communities who dwell on Lake Nokwe in Dahomey. Sedentary peoples of the Savannah are next considered in a section which includes hitherto undocumented details of Hausa architecture. The latter has been Muslim for centuries and the effects of many cultural contacts are reviewed in a study of Zanj to the southeast. Here the architecture reached a high sophistication but the refined aesthetic of the Zulu domed dwelling was achieved with restricted resources, and was totally indigenous. The range of dwelling types within a broad region is considered in a chapter on Ethiopian forms of shelter, while a detailed examination of the tents of the Tekna reveals how they are adapted to the needs of the community and to the materials available.
