YA-- An informative collection of narrative portraits of eight veteran jazz musicians. Clearly and lucidly written, these studies are based on Deffaa's interviews with seven octogenarian jazzmen in the mid-1980s, including New Orleans blues drummer Freddie Moore and two veterans of Chicago's fabled ``Austin High Gang,'' Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland. The eighth portrait is that of the legendary trumpeter, Bix Beiderbecke, who died of acute alcoholism in 1931 at age 29. The book is illustrated with vintage photographs and contains both a bibliography and a discography that lists phonograph records and tapes. While the book does not sufficiently evoke the flavor of the Jazz Age itself, it more than adequately narrates the careers of its subjects. It should appeal to students of jazz and of American history and music. --Roberta Lisker, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA
