In itself the subject is clearly defined by dates and by the peoples involved; but it is difficult to name. One may speak simply of the caliphate, and it is true that for about a century there is a single empire to which this distinctive name may be given. After A.D. 750, however, this empire began to disintegrate, and for a time there were at least three independent rulers each claiming to be a caliph, besides several other virtually autonomous rulers. On the other hand, despite the administrative disintegration the group of peoples concerned remained in some sense a unity. Many, perhaps most, still felt that they belonged together. All had entered into the heritage of Muhammad, the Messenger of God, had come to see the world in terms of an intellectual scheme based on the Qur'?n, and were at least professing to direct their lives by the Book of God and the Sunna (practice) of his Messenger. The term for this cultural unity is 'Islamic', and the subject may thus be briefly described as the prime of Islamic civilization. Seller Inventory # 8292002
