It looks first at NATO's long and frequently ambiguous attitude to out~of~area operations and contingency planning in the south Atlantic. It also investigates the frequently voiced claims that South Africa and the Western Alliance are allies in all but name. Little evidence, if any, can be found to substantiate this thesis. The first section concludes by looking at NATO's divided response to Soviet intervention in Sub~Saharan Africa since 1974 and the concern of the African States themselves to preserve their non~alignment. The second part looks at a quite different challenge: that from the Warsaw Pact whose own image of Africa accurately mirrors NATO's. It begins by looking in detail at the Pact's economic interest in the continent, especially in the light of its need for raw materials. The military intervention of East Gernany on behalf of its Warsaw Pact allies is also discussed in some detail. The book concludes by suggesting that the West might secure its own interests much better by taking greater note of the very real concerns of the Pact's East European members, and dwelling much less on the geopolitical designs of the Soviet Union.
