In The Morning of the Poem ( LJ 5/15/ 80) Schuyler quipped: ``Poetry / takes it out of you, or you/ have to have a surge to bring/ to it.'' That A Few Days is a depleted echo of Morning 's surge is highlighted by their structural similar itya sampling of verse is followed by a suite of poems and the long title piece. In the short poems it is a shock to find the soft spot in Schuyler's conversa tional style: namedropping; tedious crocheting; embarrassing, obsessive confidences about an unrequited love. A newly prominent word in his vocabu lary is the uninspiring ``perhaps.'' A short suite of exquisitely constructed poems on English subjects is followed by the title poem, a discursive medita tion which is built around, but never succeeds in containing, the death of Schuyler's mother.
