Using the family photo album as a beginning, Katie's grandmother recalls her daughter as a child, her own childhood, her daughter's younger years, and the things they all shared--a love of singing, stories, stargazing, and the small chair they have passed through the generations. Now the chair is to be given to Katie, who knows she will someday pass it to her daughter, who will also love singing, stories, and stargazing. Aubrey uses warm tones and solid structures to emphasize themes of family love and strong bonds. Her human figures, however, are so carefully posed that they appear stiff and remote. Many children will recognize the often-used photo album ploy, but some may be confused by the transition from the black-and-white photos to the full-color scenes depicting the past. As in her earlier books, Scott's narrative is straightforward and unadorned. Here, however, it seems to lack the immediacy and warmth her other books contain and that this story suggests. Amy Hest's The Midnight Eaters (Four Winds , 1989) conveys a grandmother/granddaughter relationship with more depth and poignancy.
