The books' small size and Cross' illustrations make them reminiscent of Beatrix Potter's books. Their expressive and imaginative qualities greatly extend the simple text. In Dudley and the Monster, after awakening from his winter hibernation, Dudley ventures into the springtime woods. He visits baby blackbirds in their nest and falls asleep with them. Dudley and the blackbirds are rudely awakened by a very large cat whom Dudley fends off with a feather. In Dudley Goes Flying, Dudley literally goes out on a limb to clear away the fall leaves that have stopped up his chimney. A sudden gust of wind sends Dudley and the leaves flying through the air. With the aid of a large leaf used as a parachute, Dudley makes it safely to the ground. Dudley is a throughly delightful mouse whom children will love.
